Understanding hair porosity – Shiny hair with plant-based care

🌿 The secret of hair porosity – How to find the ideal care for your hair

Did you know that your hair can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in water?
This ability is directly related to hair porosity – that is, the ability of your hair to absorb, retain and release moisture.

Knowing your hair porosity allows you to provide targeted care instead of endlessly trying different products. Plant-based hair care and dyes, in particular, can help strengthen the natural structure, build shine, and improve porosity in the long term.

What b Does this mean hair porosity?

Hair porosity describes the condition of the outer cuticle layer .
Depending on how open or closed it is, three types are distinguished:

  • Low porosity: Densely closed cuticle – moisture penetrates with difficulty, but remains well preserved.
  • Medium porosity: Balanced – moisture is absorbed and retained well.
  • High porosity: Open or damaged – moisture enters quickly, but is also lost quickly.

Why is this important?

Your hair porosity determines how your hair reacts to care products .
Highly porous hair benefits from strengthening, protective ingredients – while low porosity hair prefers lighter, moisturizing products.

Natural ingredients such as henna, amla or cassia can smooth the cuticle, strengthen the hair structure and make the hair more resilient.
With regular use, hair often becomes less porous, thicker and shinier – completely without chemicals.

What influences hair porosity?

Part of it is genetic, but external influences also play a major role:
🌬️ Heat styling, chemical dyeing, sun, seawater or air pollution can permanently open the cuticle layer.

Plant-based care products are helpful here because they do not interfere with the hair structure , but rather build up a natural protective layer .
This makes the hair more robust and smoother in the long term, and allows it to retain moisture better.

Identify your hair porosity

A simple test:
1️⃣ Take some clean, dry hair.
2️⃣ Place them in a glass of water.
3️⃣ Observe after 3–5 minutes:

  • Floating on top: Low porosity.
  • Floating in the middle: Medium porosity.
  • Sink: High porosity.

Care for every porosity type

🩵 Low porosity

The cuticle layer lies flat, hair is very shiny, but absorbs moisture poorly.
💚 Tip: Use gentle heat (e.g., a warm towel) while treatments are working.
Lightweight, water-based products or fine oils (e.g., our hair oil with amla and jojoba ) help to better lock in moisture.

💚 Medium porosity

The moisture balance is good, and the hair is easy to style.
💡 Care tip: Regularly use nourishing plant masks, e.g. Cassia or Amla powder , to strengthen the structure.
This strengthens the natural protective layer, preserves shine and prevents damage.

❤️ High porosity

The cuticle layer is open – the hair loses moisture quickly.
💡 Care tip: After washing, use a plant-based hair oil or an amla treatment to seal in moisture.
Plant-based hair dyes such as henna or henna-cassia mixtures smooth the cuticle, strengthen the hair and make it noticeably thicker.

How plant-based hair dyes improve hair porosity

Plant-based hair dyes do not work like chemical dyes – they do not penetrate the hair structure , but rather coat each hair with a layer of pigment .
This does not damage the hair, but visibly conditions it.
Each application creates a strengthening protective layer that adds shine and fullness and, in the long term, ensures less porous, healthier hair .

Many users report that after regular use of henna, amla or cassia, their hair not only appears stronger, but also has more body and shine .
